Slovenian tolar

From 8 October 1991 to 31 December 2006 the currency unit of the Republic of Slovenia was the tolar, which was divided into 100 stotini. In monetary transactions the ISO currency code SIT was used to refer to the tolar.

On 8 October 1991, the Bank of Slovenia issued provisional payment notes, placing them into circulation as a temporary currency. In September 1992, the first tolar banknotes were placed into circulation, followed by coins in January 1993.
The Bank of Slovenia also issued a number of commemorative editions to mark various events and for different purposes.

The Republic of Slovenia issued the commemorative coins to mark political, historical, scientific, cultural, sporting, humanitarian and other similar events of general importance to Slovenia or with wider international significance.

Banknotes

The tolar banknotes featured designs by Miljenko Licul and Zvone Kosovelj, with portraits by the artist Rudi Španzel.

The following banknotes were put in circulation:

  • 30 September 1992: SIT 1000 (issue from 15 January 1992), SIT 500 , SIT 100
  • 27 November 1992: SIT 10
  • 28 December 1992: SIT 20
  • 22 February 1993: SIT 200 (issue from 15 January 1992)
  • 19 March 1993: SIT 50
  • 13 December 1993: SIT 5000 (issue from 1June 1993), SIT 1000 (issue from 1 June 1993)
  • 15 March 1995: SIT 10000
  • 10 February 1998: SIT 5000 (issue from 8 October 1997)
  • 10 March 1998: SIT 200 (issue from 8 October 1997)
  • 19 June 2000: SIT 10000 (issue from 15 January 2000)
  • 10 July 2000: SIT 1000 and SIT 5000 (both issue from 15 January 2000)
  • 20 June 2001: SIT 200 and SIT 500 (both issue from 15 January 2001)
  • 15 July 2002: SIT 5000 (issue from 15 January 2002)  
  • 12 May 2003: SIT 100 and SIT 1000 (both issue from 15 January 2003)
  • 13 October 2003: SIT 10000 (issue from 15 January 2003)
  • 2 August 2004: SIT 5000, SIT 1000 and 200 SIT (issue from 15 January 2004)
  • 4 April 2005: SIT 10000 (issue from 15 January 2004)
  • 20 June 2005: SIT 1000 and SIT 500 (both issue from 15 January 2005)

Coins

Tolar coins were issued by the Republic of Slovenia in a range of denominations and with a range of motifs. The Bank of Slovenia was responsible for deciding on the date that coins were placed into circulation and for the professional and technical tasks relating to issuing coins.

The coins were designed by Miljenko Licul and Zvone Kosovelj, and modelled by the sculptor Janez Boljka.
 
The Bank of Slovenia was put in circulation the following coins:

  • 4 January 1993: 5 Tolars, 2 Tolars, 1 Tolar, 50 stotins
  • 29 April 1993: 20 stotins, 10 stotins
  • 19 April 2000: 10 Tolars
  • 7 July 2003: 20 Tolars, 50 Tolars  


Tolar coins can be exchanged for euros at the Bank of Slovenia until 3 January 2017.
